What are varicose veins?
They are twisted veins, enlarged with blood, caused by weakened vein walls and valves. Normally they are superficial and cosmetic, but they can cause aching and discomfort. They can be hereditary — though wearing compression stockings and exercising can reduce the risk.
How are varicose veins treated?
We offer a range of treatments, and which one suits you depends on the vein involved:
- Sclerotherapy
- Ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy
- Endovenous laser treatment
- VenaSeal
Treatments are usually minimally invasive and performed in the office. You can return to normal activities the same day, wearing a compression stocking for a few days afterwards.
Are compression stockings actually an effective treatment?
They can be highly effective for patients with varicose veins or chronic venous insufficiency. By applying direct pressure to the affected veins, they stimulate blood flow, reduce inflammation and prevent blood from pooling.
That said, compression stockings complement a treatment plan rather than replace one. Ask one of our providers which type is right for you. After a vein procedure you will need compression therapy for a period of around 72 hours.
What happens if I do not treat my varicose veins?
Left untreated, varicose veins can lead to sores, skin ulcers, blood clots and even deep vein thrombosis. It is best to treat them sooner rather than later to avoid these costly and, in the case of DVT, potentially life-threatening complications.

Will my insurance cover vein treatment?
Medically necessary treatment is often covered; purely cosmetic treatment is not. Coverage generally depends on documented symptoms, an ultrasound showing venous insufficiency, and in many plans a trial period of compression stockings first.
We will tell you which category you fall into, and check your specific plan, before anything is scheduled.
Is the procedure painful, and how long is recovery?
Endovenous laser treatment is performed in the office with very little discomfort in the area of the treated vein. Most patients return to normal activities the same day, wearing compression for around 72 hours afterwards.
You will be given specific aftercare instructions at your visit — walking regularly afterwards is usually encouraged rather than resting.
